The Revolt of the Evil Fairies

In the short story “The Revolt of the Evil Fairies” by Ted Poston the author shows that discrimination and prejudice occurs in the Booker T. Washington Colored Grammar School. I know this because the main character describes that the lighter skinned people get the better jobs in the community like bankers, teachers, and doctors, but where the discrimination in the story mostly happens in a play.

The play is called “Sleeping Beauty” it sounds like a good play but it's full of corruption and discrimination. The main character gets discriminated throughout the play, for example the first time he tried out for the play he tried out for the part of prince charming. He made sure he had the best grades in his class and his family was very respected but this boy named Roger Jackson got the part of prince charming just because his father was the richest and most powerful man in the community.

Discrimination can also effect people and change who they are like you can be down on your self and you can also try to change your self. This happens in the story when they are doing the play for the third time Sleeping Beauty was this girl named Sarah Williams the main character's love's her so he worked twice as hard on his lines on and put his sister's Palmer Skin Success cream on so he could make his skin lighter. Not only did he not get the part but he was not himself.

In the end the author shows you that racism is really bad even in an African American schools so remember always respect people no matter what color they are and not change who you are and like Rat said “if you black you black.”
