The Great Gatsby

This summer I read “The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.” The book takes place on Long Island in the fictional village of West Egg during the Jazz age and after World War I. It is about a millionaire who throws extravagant parties in hopes of finding his love Daisy Buchanan so he can take her away from her husband Tom Buchanan.

Gatsby and Daisy met when he was stationed in Daisy's home town. He and the other soldiers went to a party at Daisy's house they meet at the party and started a romantic relatioship and Gatsby promised to marry her but he had to go to war. Years later, when Daisy was getting married to Tom she receives a letter that says Gatsby is ready to get married and that he couldn't do that all these years because he was broke. But she could not turn back she was already married to Tom.

Gatsby was really a new money guy which means he became rich recently. But new money was looked down on because it was not classy like old money _ which means inherited wealth. Being new money caused problems for Gatsby. This is proven in the text multiple times. One example of this, his job he sold liquor during prohibition and Tom Buchanan calls him a bootlegger. A second reason is when Gatsby starts dating Daisy he know he will never get Daisy's parent approval because he is new money.

In the end. his cover gets blown and Tom figured out that Gatsby is new money and he tells Daisy and Daisy is not interested in him anymore and his life falls apart.
